Meet Our Smart Students

For a complete list of the Smart Students scholars, please visit the Smart Students website.

Choose New Jersey, along with prominent business and education leaders throughout the State, are proud to launch Smart Students Choose New Jersey, a unique scholarship and internship program. We created it to encourage our most accomplished high school students – our future leaders and innovators – to remain in New Jersey for their post-secondary education and professional careers.

The Smart Students Choose New Jersey scholarship and internship program, which is being piloted at all high schools in the cities of Newark and Camden in 2016, offers a one-time unrestricted scholarship of $2,000 to the highest academically ranked senior in each high school who chooses a New Jersey college or university.

But, more importantly, this program will reward these high achieving students with paid internships at some of the State’s top businesses and organizations – from Fortune 500 companies to entrepreneurial start-ups – for three consecutive summers, after their freshman, sophomore, and junior years. It’s a unique opportunity to hone the skills and make the connections they need to build successful careers right here at home in New Jersey.

  • "We need to do everything we can to encourage our best and brightest to stay. Choose New Jersey is doing that by putting together opportunities from the State's leading businesses and industries and committing to matching New Jersey's star students with jobs that could become their careers."
    Ralph LaRossa
President and Chief Operating Officer of PSEG Power

Smart Students Choose New Jersey was created in response to the rate at which New Jersey’s high school graduates are leaving the State for higher education. Statistics reveal that more than 30,000 graduating seniors leave New Jersey for their post-secondary education each year. Many never return.

Exporting our top talent means our most brilliant graduates will contribute to another State’s overall economic growth.

New Jersey business leaders recognize how critical access to a highly-educated and diverse talent pool is to driving their companies’ prosperity and growth. The State’s colleges and universities know that they need to attract the best and brightest young minds to propel ground-breaking research and discovery.

We invite you to join us in our quest to keep our best and brightest students in New Jersey. Please consider participating in this program by providing financial support or an internship opportunity. View our sponsorship packages to learn more.
