Director of Business Development

Choose New Jersey is seeking a knowledgeable professional to be our Director of Business Development (Director). As part of the Business Development Team, the Director will help lead the dynamic team of business development officers in lead generation activities domestically. This focused effort is intended to contribute to the continued successful economic development initiatives of Choose New Jersey. The successful candidate will serve as the main contact for day-to-day team management, domestic consultants, as well as domestic lead generation in all industry segments that are critical to the State’s economy.

Responsibilities:

  • Directs day to day activities of business development officers as well as the domestic lead generation activities of consultants.
  • Assists with attracting and recruiting business and industry to the State of New Jersey while serving as one of Choose New Jersey’s designated representatives with prospective clients.
  • Manages the department’s CRM platform to ensure that relative data for projects is recorded and updated accurately.
  • Maintains a comprehensive understanding of the business environment and incentive programs in New Jersey and our direct competitors.
  • Masters a firm understanding of New Jersey’s key industry sectors.
  • Attends events, trade shows, economic missions, and conferences to meet businesses and identify collaboration opportunities for New Jersey.
  • Understands and can articulate New Jersey’s economic incentive programs while working to become an expert in the programs available to businesses.
  • Prepares and conducts presentations to businesses and key stakeholders.
  • Assists the CBDO and Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) with the development and implementation of business attraction strategies and outreach plans.
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with professional site selection consultants, real estate brokers, and economic incentives advisors and provides comprehensive economic data upon request.
  • Works with stakeholders in order to maximize support of business attraction activities.

Skills:

  • Understanding of economic development and state and local government programs, including the state’s suite of incentive programs for businesses.
  • Experience working with stakeholders (internally and externally) at all levels of seniority and from foreign countries; awareness and respect for cultural diversity.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize work and effectively manage multiple projects simultaneously under tight deadlines.
  • Ability to exhibit sound judgment in making decisions.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality on sensitive matters.
  • Ability to adapt to change on short notice.
  • Ability to demonstrate effective public speaking skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, inclusive of Outlook.
  • Proficiency with Choose New Jersey’s CRM software, HubSpot, preferred.

Experience:

  • 7+ years of economic development, urban planning, or state-related experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Business Administration, Urban Planning, Marketing, or a related field.

Additional Information:

  • This position will require frequent travel. A valid driver’s license, access to an automobile, and passport are required.
  • Authorization to work in the U.S. is a precondition of employment.
  • Physical requirements of this position include sitting at a desk over 90% of the time. Breaks to stand and stretch can be taken as needed. When traveling, the employee may be on flights that require sitting continuously in confined spaces. Compensation:

Choose New Jersey will offer the successful candidate a competitive salary aligned to their education, years of experience, and skill set.  Total compensation and offer package will include the benefits below.

  • $120,000 – $135,000 annual salary based on experience
  • Hybrid work schedule
  • 4 weeks PTO + 10 sick days
