Governor Phil Murphy Reaffirmed Sister State Agreement Between Fukui Prefecture, Japan, and the State of New Jersey

October 16, 2023

Tokyo, Japan — Governor Murphy, joined by Fukui Prefecture Lieutenant Governor Mr. Yasuhiro Nakamura (中村保博副知事), signed a Memorandum of Understanding, reaffirming the proud partnership the people of New Jersey have shared with Fukui for more than three decades. The agreement promotes continued cooperation in the areas of education, culture, and economy. The initial agreement signed in 1990 was based on the meeting between Kusakabe Taro and William Elliot Griffis at Rutgers College more than 100 years prior. Taro was the first Japanese student to attend Rutgers in 1870, and Griffis, his friend and tutor, helped work to advance the relationship between the United States and Japan. “With the signing of today’s Memorandum of Understanding, we are going to continue building upon our partnership for the next 150 years,” said Governor Murphy. “We are going to create new economic opportunities for investment and trade across continents—and put our innovators and workers at the forefront of building our future.”
