The Stevens Institute of Technology said Friday it opened a $68 million teaching and research facility — the Gateway Academic Center.

Stevens described the Center, which officially opened on Dec. 10,  as part of a broad campaign that began in 2014 to modernize its infrastructure into a modern campus for teaching, research, learning and living.

The building features the Mary Jane and Frank Semcer Sr. ’65 Center for Healthcare Innovation to address gaps and issues related to advancing biomedical technology and health care delivery, and to integrate external strategic partnerships. Stevens says the building features a 3-D tissue culture lab, a dedicated room for DNA amplification, a cleaning room, a conference room/classroom and a large graduate student office.

The Health & Artificial Intelligence Lab will explore how to improve human health using artificial intelligence methods, while the Prototype Object Fabrication Lab will help students and faculty create parts, assemblies, mechatronic and Internet of Things-enabled systems, and programming for devices/robots.

The academic center is the new home of the computer science department, which has hired eight new faculty members in the past two years. It affords students and faculty a computer science open collaboration space, a graduate student office, two computer science labs and the Cybersecurity Lab.
