This is New Jersey: You Can Move Anything Here

Logistics is an essential aspect of modern business. As global trade continues to expand, there is a growing need for companies to optimize their supply chains to increase efficiency and capacity. No matter what business you’re in or whether you sell products in person or online, New Jersey is the ideal location for shipping, receiving, and moving goods quickly and efficiently across the U.S. or abroad. Our central location between Washington, D.C. and Boston means that goods can easily reach the heart of America’s most important economic corridor. The state has made substantial investments in infrastructure to meet increased capacity and capabilities. If global access is what you need, New Jersey is where you need to be.

New Jersey is one of the world’s major hubs for logistics, e-commerce, and distribution, and the Wall Street Journal reports that many companies are shifting their trade to the East Coast. The Port of New York and New Jersey recently surpassed the Port of Los Angeles as the busiest maritime seaport in North America. New Jersey’s unrivaled road and rail network, including 3,000 miles of interstate highway, offers access to nearly 60 million consumers within a day’s drive.

MAJOR COMPANIES CHOOSE NEW JERSEY

These investments, and New Jersey’s unrivaled location, are why businesses that rely on fast and efficient distribution channels choose New Jersey. The largest retailer-owned cooperatives in the United States — including Amazon, Goya Foods, Destination Maternity, Williams-Sonoma, Volkswagen, Barnes & Noble, Coca-Cola, The Home Depot, IKEA, W.W. Grainger, Hyundai, Crate & Barrel, Five Below, and Wakefern Food Corporation — all have major distribution centers here.

Rapport London, the British manufacturer of luxury automatic watch winders and boxes, is joining them. Rapport recently opened a logistics and distribution center in the state. The company’s U.S. clients include Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, and online retailers MR PORTER, Farfetch, and Hodinkee. Neolith, the sintered stone supplier based in Castellón, Spain, also recognized the unique benefits of operations in New Jersey to improve delivery to North American clients and recently opened a 40,000-square-foot distribution center in Carlstadt.

INVESTING IN LOGISTICS, E-COMMERCE, & DISTRIBUTION

Newark Liberty International Airport recently unveiled a dazzling new $2.7 billion, 1 million square foot, state-of-the-art Terminal A, with 33 gates and the capacity to handle 13 million passengers a year. The new terminal adds to New Jersey’s significant ability to support global commerce.

But this airport expansion isn’t the only example of the state’s commitment to investing in the infrastructure necessary to support logistics, e-commerce, and distribution. New Jersey, along with the federal government, is one of the primary funders of the Gateway Program. This $22 billion infrastructure project includes the construction of a new Hudson River tunnel, the rehabilitation of the existing tunnel, the expansion of Penn Station, and the modernization of the Port of New York and New Jersey. The project will support the region’s distribution capacity and economic development for decades.

THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT IN NEW JERSEY

Infrastructure isn’t the only area New Jersey is investing in logistics, e-commerce, and distribution. The State’s Economic Development Authority (NJEDA) recently launched a $1 million pilot program to provide free e-commerce and digital marketing consulting services to small businesses across New Jersey to help them adapt to the growing e-commerce economy, which has boomed since the global pandemic.

This is just one more reason why the logistics, e-commerce, and distribution sectors are thriving in New Jersey. The state’s transportation location, infrastructure, incentives, and business attraction efforts all explain why you can move anything here.

WHY NEW JERSEY

Global Gateway

New Jersey is at the heart of the country’s most important economic corridor, meaning no part of the world is out of reach. Global access comes from our prime location and unparalleled infrastructure. We’re part of the nation’s busiest airport system. Newark Liberty International Airport, John F. Kennedy International Airport, and LaGuardia Airport make up the #1 ranked busiest airport system in the U.S. It has unrivaled, nonstop domestic and international destinations. Combined, the three airports manage 1,200 daily nonstop domestic flights and 340 daily nonstop international flights. Not to mention, Philadelphia International Airport – yet another globally connected airport – is easily accessible.

The Port of New York and New Jersey

New Jersey has the busiest maritime seaport in North America. The Port of New York and New Jersey recently surpassed the Port of Los Angeles as the busiest seaport for imports, which held the title for 22 years. Any cargo you can imagine travels through the port, making it a leading hub for domestic freight. Over 9.4 million TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalency Units, a measurement for cargo) moved through our ports in 2022.

Our Transportation System

New Jersey’s dense network of highways, rails, and sea lanes offers access to nearly 60 million consumers (almost 1/5 of the country’s total population) within a day’s drive. Our mass transit system, NJ TRANSIT, is the country’s third largest provider of rail, light rail, bus, paratransit, and light rail service, serving 270 million passengers annually.

The New Jersey Turnpike (I-95), the Garden State Parkway, and Interstate 80 are a few of the roadways that provide vital transportation links, facilitating the movement of goods and people between major metropolitan areas and connecting New Jersey to the broader network of interstate highways across the country, allowing for more same-day and next day deliveries capabilities on the east coast.

New Jersey’s extensive passenger transit network offers several options for commuters and travelers. The state is served by NJ TRANSIT, rail, bus, paratransit, and light rail services. NJ TRANSIT operates commuter rail services, including the Northeast Corridor, North Jersey Coast Line, and Morris & Essex Lines, which connect New Jersey to New York City and other parts of the region. It also offers bus services that cover most parts of the state, including express buses that operate between major employment centers and suburban areas. Additionally, there are light rail services, including the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail and Newark Light Rail, which serve densely populated areas and provide access to urban centers. The extensive passenger transit network in New Jersey makes it easy for residents and visitors to travel within the state and to neighboring areas.

Northern New Jersey is a 20-minute train ride from New York City, and southern New Jersey is right across the Delaware River from Philadelphia. Traveling from Jersey City to Wall Street takes less time than from Midtown Manhattan. New Jersey offers rail access to Boston in four hours and Washington, D.C., in three hours. Wherever you need to go, you can get there from New Jersey.

With New Jersey’s diverse transportation options, state-of-the-art infrastructure, and innovative technologies, New Jersey is well-positioned to support the growing demand for efficient and effective logistics services. The state’s distribution systems and ability to transport goods and people are vital contributors to its economy, creating jobs and generating economic activity while helping businesses of all sizes optimize their supply chains and reach new markets.
