The New Jersey-Israeli Connection

Relatively similar in geographic size and population, both New Jersey and Israel are small but mighty. New Jersey is well known for innovation, and Israel is the “Startup Nation.” Both states share a spirit of entrepreneurship and innovation. Home to the fourth-largest Israel-born population and the fourth-largest population of Israeli ancestry in the United States, New Jersey has longstanding ties to Israel.

New Jersey and Israel signed a Sister-State Agreement in 1988 under Governor Thomas H. Kean. In 1989, the New Jersey-Israel Commission was established to implement the agreement by promoting bilateral economic and cultural relations. Previous mission trips, including the 2019 Governor Murphy-led trip, have increased collaboration and advanced research between the two states.

Israeli companies that locate here can also find a cultural match within New Jersey’s thriving Jewish communities. Israel and New Jersey total $1.72 billion in two-way trade in goods in 2022. The New Jersey-Israel connection is strong and projected to continue to grow. Discover why Israeli startups and multinationals alike are choosing New Jersey.

Why Israeli Companies Should Choose New Jersey

New Jersey’s East Coast location offers strategic access for Israeli companies looking to break into the North American market. United Airlines and El Al offer a total of three daily nonstop flights between Newark Liberty International Airport and Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv. A New Jersey-based company can reach 38 million consumers within a 2-hour drive. Manufacturers can tap into a high density of suppliers, distributors, and retailers along the supply chain, and New Jersey offers companies access to top talent. That’s why companies like Amarel and OwnBackup have chosen New Jersey to expand sales and innovate product offerings in the lucrative U.S. market.

The concentration of top talent in New Jersey is also attractive for Israeli businesses – especially for fast-scaling technology companies. Our highly educated workforce allows Israeli companies to recruit top talent. Forty percent of New Jersey residents hold a bachelor’s degree or higher compared to 32% nationally. We have the highest concentration of scientists and engineers in the U.S. New Jersey is home to the #1 public school system and the #1 university in the U.S. (Princeton University).
