Chief Business Development Officer

Choose New Jersey is seeking an experienced business development leader as our next Chief Business Development Officer (CBDO). The CBDO reports to the President & CEO and will be responsible for the development and implementation of all business development initiatives with a goal of driving job creation and investment into New Jersey. The CBDO will work collaboratively to plan, execute, and evaluate domestic and international business attraction strategies, manage all major business development relationships, as well as manage teams based in Newark and internationally.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the organization’s business development growth strategy for domestic and international markets, including strategies for industry sectors critical to the future growth of the state economy.
  • Develop a strategy for the organization’s national and international lead generation, prospect management, and business development efforts supporting the economic growth of the state.
  • Facilitate discussions with private and public sector partners on statewide economic development initiatives.
  • Serve as senior principal in client meetings, site visits, domestic and international conferences and trade shows, and international business attraction missions.
  • Leverage the organization’s extensive board membership to assist in key business development strategy and company engagements.
  • Facilitate strategic partnerships and collaboration between government entities, regional chambers and business associations, and education and financial institutions.
  • Oversee the execution of the organization’s research initiatives.
  • Lead the strategic vision and successful outcomes for the business development department as part of large-scale international trade missions.
  • Serve as lead advisor and liaison to the organization’s Business Development Committee.
  • Manage the organization’s Newark-based business development team, providing mentorship and regular feedback to create a cohesive, collaborative, and high-functioning team.

Skills:

  • Proven experience in creating large-scale, complex business development strategies to support economic growth in a region or country.
  • Advanced understanding of economic development and state and local government programs.
  • Experience in the development, negotiation, and closure of agreements with both domestic and international clients.
  • Demonstrated ability to delegate and prioritize assignments while effectively managing multiple projects under tight deadlines.
  • Experience developing staff competencies and building a cohesive, collaborative team, including international office consultants.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Strong organizational skills and detail oriented.
  • Ability to exhibit sound judgment in making decisions.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality on sensitive matters.
  • Ability to develop and implement budgets.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Experience:

  • 10+ years’ experience in related economic development profession.
  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, economics, or related field preferred.
  • Experience in managing and cultivating a team of motivated business development professionals.

Additional Information:

  • This position will require frequent travel. A valid driver’s license and passport are required.
  • Authorization to work in the U.S. is a precondition of employment.
  • Vaccination against COVID-19 (inclusive of a booster), or having a documented medical exemption is a pre-requisite for employment.
  • A minimum of three references will be required.

Business Development Officer

Choose New Jersey is seeking a knowledgeable professional to be our next Business Development Officer (BDO). As part of the Business Development Team, the BDO coordinates sector-specific, industry lead generation activities domestically and internationally which will contribute to the continued successful economic development initiatives of Choose New Jersey. The successful candidate will serve as the main contact for all activities in his or her respective industry segments that are critical to the State’s economy.

Responsibilities:

  • Conducts proactive lead generation outreach. Establishes contacts to promote economic development activities, continually updates the customer relations management (CRM) database and industry data. Actively manages project pipeline with leads and opportunities within assigned sectors.
  • Organizes domestic and international industry/business analyses and prepares responses for requests for information. Performs research and detailed analyses across multiple industry sectors.
  • Develops a firm understanding of New Jersey’s key industry sectors as assigned. Stays abreast of news as it relates to assigned sectors.
  • Attends events, trade shows and conferences and meets with businesses to identify business and collaboration opportunities for New Jersey. These events could be both domestic and international.
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with key stakeholders, including local economic development officers, NJ Economic Development Authority sector leads, real estate brokers, and economic incentives advisors.
  • Supports Business Development’s Research Manager in managing and preparing responses for requests for information from site selectors, real estate brokers, and other key service providers.
  • Prepares presentations, in collaboration with the Marketing team, and presents to businesses and key stakeholders.
  • Provides additional support on projects and activities, such as domestic and international trade missions and other business development outreach events.

Skills:

  • Understanding of economic development and state and local government programs, including the state’s suite of incentive programs for businesses.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize work and effectively manage multiple projects simultaneously under tight deadlines.
  • Experience working with clients at all-levels of seniority and from foreign countries; awareness and respect for cultural diversity.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Strong organizational skills and detail oriented.
  • Ability to exhibit sound judgment in making decisions.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality on sensitive matters.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, inclusive of Outlook. Project Management software experience (Asana or Monday.com) a plus.
  • Proficiency with Choose New Jersey’s CRM software, HubSpot, preferred.

Experience:

  • 3+ years of economic development, urban planning, or state-related experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Business Administration, Urban Planning, Marketing, or related field.

Executive Assistant

Choose New Jersey is seeking an experienced professional as our next Executive Assistant to the CEO. The Executive Assistant will report to the Chief of Staff and will lead all aspects of administrative support required for the CEO and the Choose New Jersey team. The successful candidate will perform advanced, diversified, and sensitive administrative and operational duties. This will require comprehensive experience, knowledge, and skills, including the ability to communicate with C-Suite level executives both internal to the organization and external stakeholders that include the Board of Directors and the Governor’s Office.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage the CEO’s calendar by scheduling and confirming appointments, conferences, meetings, and travel arrangements as necessary. Use judgment and discretion to establish appointment priorities and in rescheduling appointments.
  • Prepare and edit outgoing correspondence regarding matters of significance, including email messages, physical mail, and memos. Review correspondence and requests for information directed to the CEO, distribute correspondence appropriately and track and follow-up on correspondence when necessary.
  • Serve as a liaison between the leadership team, staff, and various internal and external customers by responding to calls and arranging meetings, videoconferences, and site visits.
  • Operate as the primary professional staff support to senior executives by researching, prioritizing, and following-up on multiple issues and concerns addressed to the assigned staff member.
  • Facilitate and coordinate logistics for department meetings, strategic meetings, offsites and workshops, such as conference rooms and/or locations, attendees, and times for meetings.
  • Coordinate and book travel itineraries for CEO and staff; complete expense reports within guidelines.
  • Serve as point of contact for external use of Choose New Jersey conference rooms.
  • Perform other administrative duties to support the Choose New Jersey office including but not limited to office supply management and event hosting.

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Management or related field preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in C-suite executive support; prior government experience is a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Suite and advanced calendar management abilities in Outlook.
  • Strong organizational skills with laser-focused attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks with competing priorities in a quick and efficient manner.
  • Excellent communication skills inclusive of writing and proofreading, with the ability to interact professionally with supporters and staff.  Strong telephone and personal communication skills to represent company well to all external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to anticipate needs, seek out relevant information, and provide appropriate and timely responses.
  • History of building effective, collaborative working relationships that are dependent upon mutual trust and confidence, integrity, discretion and confidentiality, sound judgment, and diplomacy.
  • Demonstrated initiative, resourcefulness, and willingness to develop new skills and knowledge.
  • Proven experience handling sensitive, confidential information.
