Onyx Equities unveils redesign of Gateway Newark into city’s business hub

new Gateway is coming to the Brick City. Redevelopment plans revealed Wednesday by Onyx Equities LLC show the future of the commercial complex in Newark and establish it as the city’s hub of business and cultural activity.

In response to Newark leadership’s plan to transform the city into a walkable destination, Onyx reimagined public spaces and expanded retail and dining options to support the explosion of the city’s commercial and residential interests.

“Gateway is located at the nexus of where Newark’s tech, transit, culture, community, and business all come together, it was important for us to redevelop the space to support all of the functions it should be serving for the thousands of people who walk through here daily,” said John Saraceno, managing principal of Onyx Equities. “While Gateway is currently a corridor for commuters, our new plans will help us realize its full potential as a place to begin one’s journey into Newark’s cultural mecca.”

Gateway’s exterior was redesigned to include approximately 10,000 square feet of street-facing retail space for the first time. Gateway’s concourse, lobbies and 5,000 square feet of converted retail space will also be reconfigured to be consistent with the expectations of today’s tenancy to include spaces of varying sizes to relax, or enjoy food and drink from local and international dining options. A sleek color palette, updated windows and modern textures will complete the look.

“We have experienced great momentum in the leasing process over the past 12 months based upon the Onyx’s reputation alone,” said Blake Goodman, executive vice president at JLL. “Newark has been gaining moment locally and nationally, and we are now at a point where we are literally being begged by the brokerage community to share our completed renderings. Their clients want to see what all the buzz is about and I can’t wait for them to realize the magnitude of this project.”

As an added bonus, all public spaces in Gateway feature Gateway Connect by Newark Fiber, providing some of the fastest wireless available with one of the first deployments of WiFi 6 and a dedicated multi-gig Internet feed.

Onyx acquired three of the four Gateway Center buildings in 2018 as its entry into the Newark office market that continues to gain momentum attracting start-up and mature tech-oriented businesses.
