Home Depot to open logistics center in Perth Amboy; project could create 500 jobs

Home Depot will establish its newest warehousing facility in Perth Amboy, the city’s mayor announced Thursday.

“We have facilitated significant expansion in the City of Perth Amboy through the redevelopment of brownfields,” Mayor Wilda Diaz said. “It has fueled job creation and economic growth in the past few years. Through the work of the Redevelopment Agency and the confidence of our investors, we have attracted several outstanding businesses this past year, including Target (and) TheRealReal, and we are pleased to welcome our latest investor, Home Depot, to Perth Amboy.”

Duke Realty, Diaz said, has been retained as the developer for the Elm Street Logistics Center project.

The project includes the investment of more than $100 million into the remediation and construction of 92 acres of warehouse facilities, Diaz said. It will consist of both business and public property developments.

The project, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2020, is set to create approximately 500 new jobs.

Through the partnership with Duke Realty, the city said it is planning to preserve a historic structure for recreational use on the site and also provide public waterfront access, including an amphitheater, picnic areas, restrooms, a senior citizens park and a mile-long green pathway along the shore.

“In particular, we are pleased to have executed a major transaction with one of our largest customers. We signed two leases totaling 1.3 million square feet for two build-to-suit logistics facilities for Home Depot U.S.A. Inc. The facilities are located on an in-fill redevelopment site in the Perth Amboy submarket of northern New Jersey,” according to Duke Realty’s second quarter release.

“Home Depot’s investment with us is part of their previously announced $1.2 billion supply-chain overhaul to enhance delivery to consumer and commercial customers in one day or less.  We are pleased to continue providing customized supply chain facility solutions and service to one of our leading customers.”
