Luxury handbag maker Louis Vuitton has decided to repurpose some its workshops, one of which is located in New Jersey, to begin producing non-surgical cloth face masks for people during the coronavirus pandemic.
The company’s Piscataway workshop, along with ones in California and Texas, will be begin production on what will ultimately be hundreds of thousands of masks this week, the company said.
The masks produced at the facilities will be washable and adjustable and will be donated and distributed in states heavily affected by COVID-19, Louis Vuitton said.
The company said it will partner with local organizations that are leading the coronavirus relief effort in each state to distribute the masks.
Louis Vuitton’s French workshop was recently reopened to also produce masks for healthcare workers and nursing homes in France, officials said.
