Drawing on U.S. Patents & Trademark Office data, CommercialCafe recently released a new study, which explores the importance of U.S. innovation by looking at more than four decades of national patent activity. Patent distribution across industries was mapped, and the U.S.-based corporations that have been leading the race for intellectual property since 1975, through 2019 were tracked.

According to the study, New Jersey is the fifth most innovative state in the country, with a total of 161,218 U.S.-based assignee patents filed and granted here in the past four decades. Some highlights of the study include:

The CPC section with the most patent activity in the state was Chemistry & Metalurgy, with a patent count of 46,778;

The most innovative CPC class in New Jersey was Medical or Veterinary Science & Hygiene, followed by Organic Chemistry, with 33,316 and 27,004 patents, respectively;

Textiles & Paper was the least innovative section in the state, with a patent count of 2,247; and
Nationally, USPTO data for the past 44 years shows that the highest patent applicability falls under Physics, with 1.1 million patents, followed closely by Electricity, with 900,000 patents.
